Take Pay-Any-Amount Payments with a Stripe Payment Link
Let clients pay the amount on their invoice from a Pay Now page, with an invoice number, through your connected Stripe account, and log each payment in TrustPager with an automation.
If you quote every job individually, you probably don't want a public price list on your website. What you want is a Pay Now page where your client types in the amount on their invoice, adds the invoice number, and pays. That payment then lands in TrustPager against the right contact.
You can set this up with a Stripe Payment Link plus one TrustPager automation. Stripe hosts the payment page, and TrustPager picks up every payment, including the invoice number your client typed in.
Before you start, connect your Stripe account at https://app.trustpager.com/auto/integrations. See https://www.trustpager.com/help-center/stripe-connect-invoices if you haven't done this yet.
1. Create a "customer chooses the amount" Payment Link in Stripe
In your Stripe dashboard, go to https://dashboard.stripe.com/payment-links/create. Choose Customers choose what to pay, and set a minimum amount if you want one. Under the options, add a custom field of type Text with the label Invoice number, or whatever you want your clients to describe the payment with. Save the link, then put it behind the Pay Now button or tab on your website.
2. Create a TrustPager automation on "Stripe Payment Succeeded"
Go to https://app.trustpager.com/auto/automations and create an automation with the Stripe Payment Succeeded trigger. Then:
- No extra condition is needed. Stripe reports a Payment Link payment more than once (the checkout and the card charge), but TrustPager fires this trigger once per payment, from the checkout, which is the event that carries the invoice number. If you added a
stripe_event_typeequalscheckout.session.completedcondition earlier, it still works and you can leave it or remove it. - Find or create the contact by mapping
customer_emailandcustomer_namein the automation's CRM Integration settings. - Log the payment with the variables below, for example in a note or activity on the contact, or on an opportunity.
Variables you can use
{{amount}}: the amount paid, in dollars.{{description}}: what the payer typed into the first text field, such as the invoice number.{{custom_fields}}: every custom field the payer filled in, keyed by the field's key (for exampleinvoice_number).{{customer_email}}and{{customer_name}}: the payer's details.{{payment_link_id}}: which Payment Link was used. This is useful if you have more than one link, for example one per website.
Good to know
- One-off payments only. Stripe's "customers choose what to pay" option doesn't support monthly or other recurring payments. For a recurring arrangement, invoice it from an opportunity instead: see https://www.trustpager.com/help-center/stripe-connect-invoices.
- It works with any Stripe checkout. Custom fields on any Stripe Checkout payment in your connected account come through the same way, not only on Payment Links.
- Check it works by making one small payment through your link, then opening the automation's run log at https://app.trustpager.com/auto/automations. The run should show your invoice number as the description.
